Waist-to-height ratio

Measure your waist halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip, after breathing out normally.

General information for adults, not a diagnosis. For questions about your health, talk to a healthcare professional.

Your waist-to-height ratio
--
waist ÷ height

LowUnder 0.4
Healthy0.4 to 0.49
Increased0.5 to 0.59
High0.6 or more

Keep your waist under half your height

The ratio is your waist divided by your height, both in the same unit. Because it looks at the middle of the body, it shows where weight sits, which BMI alone does not.

The Doc24hrs app can show its own waist-to-height estimate, calculated from the height and weight in your profile rather than from a tape measure. A real measurement with a tape is the more direct number.
