What BMI tells you, and what it doesn’t
BMI is your weight in pounds times 703, divided by your height in inches squared. It is a quick way to compare weight and height across many people, which is why it is so widely used.
It does not measure body fat directly. Two people with the same BMI can have very different amounts of muscle and fat, and the adult ranges do not apply to children and teens, who use age and sex percentiles instead.
If your result surprises you, take it as a reason to talk with a healthcare professional, not as a verdict.
Ranges: the CDC’s adult BMI categories (the CDC is the U.S. federal public health agency).
